Laziness, dishonesty and racism - protest against SMEC Engineering's cultural report on Warragamba Dam.
SMEC (an organisation that was banned from working in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka for allegations of bribery) are taking the lead on the dam raising proposal, and have commissioned an awful cultural assessment as part of the process. They have produce a rushed, inadequate and biased report which completely undermines the rich cultural heritage of the areas under threat. Why is the future of the Gundungurra people in the hands of this dodgy firm?
This report has labeled so many of the sacred, ancient sites found in the areas to be impacted as having 'low significance'. The only 2 remaining waterholes which provide a connection to the Gundungurra dreaming stories will be lost. But this barely rates a mention. SMEC obviously rates the culture, history and survival of these traditional owners as being of 'low significance'. It just gets in the way of making them money.
SMEC are in the business of white washing cultural destruction. Help us show them enough is enough. The history and survival of a culture should not be treated as a box-ticking operation.
Protests will be held over the coming weeks.
