Today it was announced that a NSW Upper House committee will be established to examine the proposal to raise Warragamba Dam wall. The committee will have a Labor-Independent majority, with One Nation already voicing their opposition to the dam proposal in the NSW Parliament on Tuesday.

The committee will be examining the many question marks that surround development interests on the western Sydney floodplain, as well as the serious environmental destruction the proposed dam would cause to the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. GIVE A DAM community campaigner, Harry Burkitt, said:

“We welcome a formal parliamentary process that will examine the serious questions marks around developer interests in this dam proposal. Undoubtedly there are deals being done behind the scenes that the people of western Sydney don’t know about.

“This committee will hopefully get to the bottom of why developers are making so much money from allowing thousands of people to move onto western Sydney floodplains.

“The NSW Government have been extremely secretive to date about the dam proposal and its significant impacts on the iconic Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. Undoubtedly UNESCO will be watching the proceedings of this committee with a keen eye.”
